5 Things to Consider when Buying a Used Caravan

Save on summer travel expenses by buying a used caravan. Caravans tend to be more affordable than camper vans because they are towed and don’t have engines. You’ll find that some may cost less than a thousand pounds. Caravan insurance can also be just as affordable.

Successful caravan purchases depend on several factors. Familiarize yourself with the prospect of caravan ownership. Speak to others who own them. Borrow one and test it out if you’ve never camped in a caravan before. Then follow five essential steps to ensure that your final purchase suits your needs.

Research and Collect Information

Lots of research ensures a successful purchase. Collect information about caravan layouts and models. Read caravan reviews online. Document your vehicle’s maximum towing weight as this information is key to finding a caravan that’s suitable for use with your towing vehicle. Note that caravan widths also dictate the type of vehicle that must tow it. Inquire about the cost of insuring the caravan you’re most interested in purchasing.

Choose a Suitable Caravan Size

Large caravans are often luxurious, however, ease of road handling and insurance or fuel costs can make some buyers reconsider their interest in a larger size caravan. Think carefully about size as it will impact the cost of your journeys as well your comfort. Choose a size that comfortably accommodates the number of people who will be sleeping in the caravan when you’re out camping.

Caravan size can also influence how safe you’ll be on the road. The weight of the caravan and its tow vehicle must remain within limits recommended by manufacturers.

Investigate the Caravan’s History

Bad things can happen to caravans. Some may have been immersed in a flood, others may have been stolen. Make sure that the caravan’s identifying numbers and description matches what’s on official record. Familiarize yourself with the seller’s history, too. Make sure you buy your caravan from a trustworthy seller and don’t be afraid of asking lots of questions.

Perform a Visual Inspection

Look for signs that a caravan may be uninhabitable or in need of expensive repairs. Indicators of trouble include mold, evidence of leaking and discoloration. Check around the caravan’s windows and take a look at its ceiling and walls. Caravan flooring can also suffer water damage, so make sure it doesn’t feel spongy as you walk on it. Perform a visual inspection of cabinets and storage lockers, too. Consider taking a damp meter from a hardware store with you to measure the amount of damp inside of the caravan.

After you’re sure the vehicle is watertight and free of mould and damp, check the caravan’s chassis, suspension and hitch. Repairs in these areas of the caravan can be expensive and can wreck a successful purchase. New paint beneath the caravan could be an indicator of an attempt to hide corrosion.

Before you finish with a visual inspection, look for signs of neglect that can impact the caravan’s mechanical functioning, such a poorly greased parts, split rubber and make-shift electrical repairs.

Conduct a Mechanical Inspection

Check the caravan’s hitch, doors, windows, support legs, and wheels. These should all move freely and be in acceptable condition. Test the caravan’s handbrake. Turn on the electricity and check the condition of the caravan’s electrical system. Inspect the caravan’s gas flow to burners and heaters as well. Depending on the caravan’s cost, a professional inspection may be worthwhile.

Once you have your own caravan there are a number of online resources offering services specifically to caravan owners. The Caravan Club is one of them. They provides services for caravan, motorhome and trailer tent owners, as well as offering a superb choice of quality caravan parks and caravan sites in the UK and Ireland

New lodges lead to Devon’s secret “peach of a beach”

New Lodges Lead to Devon's Secret Patch

Lovers of natural beauty are being given the once-in-a-lifetime chance to own a luxury holiday lodge just a short stroll from one of Devon’s most picturesque yet least crowded beaches.

Gorgeous St Mary’s Bay near Brixham is often only glimpsed from boats at sea, or discovered by keen walkers tackling the rugged coastline path.

But now, a new collection of timber-built holiday homes on the cliffs above the bay provides not just spectacular views, but also privileged access to this hidden gem.

The sandy beach of St Mary’s Bay is at the end of a short private path from the small development of eleven lodges, all with timber decking, which start at just £99,995.

Go-ahead for the top-spec holiday homes was given by local planners to Park Holidays UK after environmental studies confirmed there would be no impact on the area’s abundant wildlife.

Lodge owners will be able to enjoy not just the superb flora and fauna of the location, but also breathtaking views along the coast and out to sea.

The lodge development is located in exclusive grounds set apart from the adjacent Riviera Bay holiday park, owned by Park Holidays UK.

An eleven-month opening season means that buyers will be able to take holidays throughout the four seasons in their architect-inspired lodges

All-weather comfort is assured by the high-efficiency central heating and the superior levels of insulation with which all of the lodges come equipped as standard.

The three different models each have two good-size bedrooms and two bathrooms, generous living areas, fully-fitted modern kitchens, plenty of storage space, and luxury furnishings.

Although intended to appeal to quality-conscious buyers, the lodges cost just a fraction of the price of similar-size – and even much smaller – holiday cottages along the nearby coast.

Couples and families who enjoy scenic beauty and discovering Devon’s natural heritage will feel especially privileged as lodge owners, says Park Holidays UK.

“We are immensely proud of this development which offers some of the most dramatic coastal views in the entire West Country,” said Park Holidays UK director Tony Clish.

“It’s also just a few minutes’ walk from Berry Head National Nature Reserve with its stunning limestone cliffs and fantastic wildlife, and is on the Devon coastline footpath.

“Without doubt, St Mary’s Bay is now the West Country’s prime location for countryside connoisseurs,” added Tony.

The facilities of Riviera Bay holiday park – which include a new pool complex and entertainment centre – will also be freely available to lodge owners, if they wish.

Meanwhile, the company has now opened its first lodge showhomes for inspection, and announced a Bucks Fizz official launch party on Friday 18 May 2012.

Members of the public are invited to come along to see the development for themselves between 3.00pm and 7.30pm.

More information about Riviera Bay is available at www.ParkHolidays.co.uk.

Course Fishing

Pillaton Hall Farm is home to four well-stocked coarse fishing pools, all enjoying far reaching views over Cannock Chase. Built by the Pearce family in the late 1990′s the pools have been regularly stocked with good quality fish, sourced from some of the oldest lakes in the UK.

The pools are all stocked with a variety of species ranging from 1 inch skimmer bream to 20lb monster carp. All are welcome at Pillaton Pools, young and old; although all children under-16 must be accompanied by an adult for their own safety.

Pillaton Pools’ facilities for disabled fishermen, including purpose-built pathways and fishing platforms combined with its enviable location means that it draws fishermen looking for a good day’s coarse fishing from across Staffordshire including Penkridge and Stafford as well as from Wolverhampton, Stoke-on-Trent and the West Midlands.

The Cherry Pool

This pools was originally built in 1960 as a water holding reservoir for Pillaton Hall Farm and has a stream feeding it. The pool has a pump house and borehole feeding it which, in summer, is used to feed all the other pools and aerate the water during hot periods. The pool is a shallow 3ft at the furthest end from the car park but drops to between 10 – 15ft toward the car park end.

The Dip

The Dip is the largest pool on the site but is also the most open to the elements – so remember to pack some warm clothes for a windy and cold day. Located at the far end of the site the pool has an island in the middle, making it an ideal pool on which to use a feeder. Around the margins waters are shallow running from a 1ft gradually falling away 9 or 10 ft around the island, making it a safer option for children as the margins are shallower than the others. We ask you not to use floating baits if wildlife is present.

The Marl Pit

The smallest pool on the site is The Marl Pit which, while used as a stock pool, also has a good range of larger fish and is the only pool at present to hold ghost carp. The deepest point is in the centre at 6ft with depths of about 3ft around its margins. This is a nice pool for hot days as you have some tree cover on one side, offering welcome shade.

The Chase View Pool

If you fancy a quiet afternoon’s fishing and don’t mind a 5 minute walk, then park on The Dip car park and follow the signs for Pool 4. This pool is only 4 years old but has come on extremely well – as it is a little further from the car park it gets fished less often and the fish are in fantastic condition. The end closest to the gate has a sunken island 2ft below the surface dropping around the sides of the island to about 8ft, which is the average depth of the pool.
