Park Holidays UK in party spirits at 25-year milestone

Park Holidays UK is promising an air of celebration across all of its parks this summer as it marks 25 years of providing happy holiday memories.

Events planned throughout 2014 will include free entertainment with an anniversary theme, plus many special holiday offers in the run-up to the main summer season.Park Holidays UK

These currently include short breaks from £69.00 – a price not wildly different from holiday costs in 1989 when the company opened its first park in Rye, East Sussex.

By contrast, most other prices since then have soared – for 25 years ago, a litre of petrol cost just 50 pence, a pint of beer about the same, and the average house price was £36,000.

Park Holidays UK director Tony Clish says that his group has helped to create a present-day golden age of low-cost park holidays by raising standards and increasing visitor numbers.

The Southern England company today owns 23 high quality holiday parks in seaside locations from Devon in the West to Suffolk in the east – and plans to continue expanding.

The formula of providing superior accommodation and leisure facilities, says Tony, has broadened considerably the appeal of park holidays, so enabling prices to be kept down.

And it’s not only families renting holiday homes who have benefitted. Demand from buyers of caravan holiday homes, Tony reports, has also increased dramatically over the years.

This has strengthened the group’s buying power, and fully furnished and equipped holiday homes made specifically for Park Holidays UK today start from just £6,995.00.

As part of celebrations for its quarter-century milestone, the company has this month declared that it will pay buyers’ 2014 pitch fees on many of its currently available models.

According to Tony Clish, Park Holidays UK has been one of the principal forces for transforming the image of Britain’s holiday parks industry:

Park Holidays UK“Twenty five years ago, low prices often meant a rather average standard of accommodation and a rather unremarkable line-up of facilities and attractions,” he said.

“Our philosophy from the start was to invest substantially in our parks, providing the best possible accommodation, leisure opportunities and entertainment almost regardless of cost.

“We believed this would help expand dramatically the appeal of our product – and as each newly acquired park in turn proved that point, Park Holidays UK continued to grow.

“The group’s commitment to fair pricing and first-class surroundings is still the same today, and I’m certain that there are still many chapters of our success story yet to be written!” added Tony.

Course Fishing

Pillaton Hall Farm is home to four well-stocked coarse fishing pools, all enjoying far reaching views over Cannock Chase. Built by the Pearce family in the late 1990’s the pools have been regularly stocked with good quality fish, sourced from some of the oldest lakes in the UK.

The pools are all stocked with a variety of species ranging from 1 inch skimmer bream to 20lb monster carp. All are welcome at Pillaton Pools, young and old; although all children under-16 must be accompanied by an adult for their own safety.

Pillaton Pools’ facilities for disabled fishermen, including purpose-built pathways and fishing platforms combined with its enviable location means that it draws fishermen looking for a good day’s coarse fishing from across Staffordshire including Penkridge and Stafford as well as from Wolverhampton, Stoke-on-Trent and the West Midlands.

The Cherry Pool

This pools was originally built in 1960 as a water holding reservoir for Pillaton Hall Farm and has a stream feeding it. The pool has a pump house and borehole feeding it which, in summer, is used to feed all the other pools and aerate the water during hot periods. The pool is a shallow 3ft at the furthest end from the car park but drops to between 10 – 15ft toward the car park end.

The Dip

The Dip is the largest pool on the site but is also the most open to the elements – so remember to pack some warm clothes for a windy and cold day. Located at the far end of the site the pool has an island in the middle, making it an ideal pool on which to use a feeder. Around the margins waters are shallow running from a 1ft gradually falling away 9 or 10 ft around the island, making it a safer option for children as the margins are shallower than the others. We ask you not to use floating baits if wildlife is present.

The Marl Pit

The smallest pool on the site is The Marl Pit which, while used as a stock pool, also has a good range of larger fish and is the only pool at present to hold ghost carp. The deepest point is in the centre at 6ft with depths of about 3ft around its margins. This is a nice pool for hot days as you have some tree cover on one side, offering welcome shade.

The Chase View Pool

If you fancy a quiet afternoon’s fishing and don’t mind a 5 minute walk, then park on The Dip car park and follow the signs for Pool 4. This pool is only 4 years old but has come on extremely well – as it is a little further from the car park it gets fished less often and the fish are in fantastic condition. The end closest to the gate has a sunken island 2ft below the surface dropping around the sides of the island to about 8ft, which is the average depth of the pool.

Camping and Campsite this Easter Holiday

Easter is on its way and with the weather improving daily many are looking for that great getaway.

It will be for most the first real holiday of the season so time to air out the tents and sleeping bags.

Clean out the motorhome and give the caravan a worthy wash down  if it’s been in winter storage.

St Ives Bay in Cornwall West

St Ives Bay in Cornwall West

Many campsites will now be offering seasonal pitches – keep in mind the distance you are prepared to travel. So even though the thought of spending days inCornwall and Devon, surfing on their beautiful beaches, if you need to travel 5-6 hours it may not be so cost effective.

My sister travels 4 hours,  so when we visit her for a holiday the journey can become tiresome as it’s an extra hour from Hereford to Cornwall. :)

The Black and white House in Hereford

I live inHerefordshire and love to travel the coast, so a seasonal pitch would be ideal in Wales e.g Pembrokeshire, Gower Penisula, Swansea, Tenby etc

If inland is more your destination, look for somewhere that has a lot to do in the area, even on those rainy days. If you love walking, Gwynedd is a great start with the Snowdonial National Park just a stones through away.

This Easter why not visit our late availabilities and you may find some parks with special offers, especially if you book at the last minute.

If you fancy a bit of fishing then please follow this link Campsites with Fishing

You can narrow down your criteria by county, town or facilities.

Many kids love the Adventure Holidays as it keeps them occupied whilst the adults relax.

The Holiday Park Groups have some great offers this time of year, so please keep your eyes peeled on Haven Holidays, Park Holiday UK and Park Resorts.

Maybe you are searching for a more luxurious holiday without the hassle of tents or caravans, if this is the case then Glamping will be your thing –  with so many glamping units to choose from such as camping pods, The Log Pod Holidays, Tipi Hire, Yurt Hire, Lodges and Log Cabins.

Don’t forget that many parks are offering special activities for Easter so check out the Events page on the UK Campsite Finder’s website if you’re unsure where to go.

However you choose to spend your Easter break, please have a great time!

From the Campsite Finder Team.

Why has family camping become so popular in the UK?

Camping becomes highly popular in the UK

Since the recession hit, people haven’t been able to afford holidays abroad. It is because of this that many families are packing up their tents, collapsible chairs and gas cookers and venturing to different camping spots all over the UK to soak in some areas of natural beauty. Camping trips are cheap and cheerful and are a great chance to be “at one” with nature. Another plus for camping families is the bonding time you get to spend with your loved ones, there’s something more satisfying when you have to cook your own food, gather kindling and slave away trying to get a fire to start, yeah you’ll be huffing and puffing whilst dad gets on he’s old man knees and spends what seems like forever to get it started, but it’s totally worth the wait.

There are some amazing areas of natural beauty in the UK, and some of them are famous for their picturesque views and stunning landscapes. However, some come as a bit of a surprise and even the most hardened of campers will appreciate some of the spectacular parts of nature which aren’t too far from even the biggest of cities. If you’re unsure of where to go with your tent, why not try these places:

  •  Cornwall – A beautiful area bordered with exquisite beaches and beautiful countryside, Cornwall is a great place to take the family for camping. From the buzz of Newquay in peak season to the tranquillity of St Ives on a summer’s evening, it is an ideal holiday destination.
  •  Warwickshire – A county steeped in history and culture, it is not only a great place to sleep under the stars, it is also rich in activities for the daytime – visit the butterfly farm in Stratford Upon Avon, visit Warwick Castle to soak up some historic knowledge, or hire boats for a day on the water!
  • The New Forest – The New Forest itself is a huge area virtually untouched by humans apart from those that walk or cycle through it. A perfect place to ride horses or have picnics, this is Hampshire’s little gem.
  • The Lake District – Hire a boat and sail around one of the many lakes, go hiking, visit the many quaint towns and villages or even go canoeing, fishing or swimming. The west coast of Cumbria even offers beautiful beaches for those who want to relax on the sand.

Fun Things to Do with the Family When Camping
Each camping location across the UK will be able to offer you and your family something different to do. Outdoor activities are an ideal way to spend some quality time with your loved ones and have lots of fun too. Of course, weather in the UK isn’t always pleasant so make sure that you plan plenty of indoor activities too – even if this means staying wrapped up in your tent and playing a card game! Here are a few suggestions which might whet your appetite for adventure:

1.     Light a Campfire

2.     Go Fishing

3.     Do Some Stargazing

4.     Go for Walks

5.     Visit Local Places of Interest (Museums, stately homes, castles, landmarks or maybe even forests!)

6.     Go Swimming (this will depend on weather, location, and whether there actually is somewhere to swim!)

7.     Go on a Bike Ride (you could hire or bring your own)

Camping is great because it is simple – so enjoy the simplicity and start exploring the great outdoors!

Cycling in Devon and Cornwall on the Tarka Trail and Camel Trail

Bicycles date back to the first half of the 19th century, where they were invented and developed in Germany, they wee originally known as velocipedes and by the turn of the 20th century Birmingham and Coventry in the English Midlands were the home to the majority of Britain’s bicycle trade. The many engineering companies and brands which supported the early bicycle trade, would later pave the way for the development of motorcycles and motorcars.

Since this time, many improvements and inventions have taken place relating to the humble bicycle. Advances in pneumatic tyres, gearing systems, suspensions, calliper and disc brakes, wheels, chains, derailleur systems, bearings, forks and lightweight frames have led to the bicycle becoming an extremely popular and reliable mode of transport on two wheels.

Types Of Bicycle

Today, bicycles are generally categorised as either mountain bikes, road bikes (or racing

A traditional Pashley Bike

bikes), hybrid bikes, touring bikes, BMX bikes and folding bikes.

Mountain bikes are generally rugged in design and can be used for both on-road and off-road cycling, they are usually designed with front and sometimes rear suspension and a good set of gears for steep tracks. Mountain biking can be considered an extreme sport with races, trials and events taking place world wide. Mountain biking is a culture and is an extremely popular hobby which is supported with magazines, mountain bike trails and courses and many rough terrain routes some of which are man made or purpose built through woods and mountains.

Road bikes are only suitable for on-road cycling and is still a popular sport with racing events often taking place over long distances such as the Tour De France. Racing bikes are often very expensive and can be considered specialist bikes due to the very lightweight frames which add to a cyclists speed. They usually do not come with suspension as this can slow a rider down when exerting energy on a smooth flat surface such as the road.

Hybrid bikes are becoming more and more popular with commuters in towns and cities. A hybrid bike will be ideal for on-road and also off-road providing the terrain is not too rough. The wheels are often thinner than a mountain bike but more durable than a racing bike, they are ideal for canal tow paths, forest tracks, roads and light off-road terrain. Hybrids are usually hard tail bikes and they will sometimes come with front suspension which can be locked.

Mountain Bikes For Touring

Touring bikes are similar to Hybrid cycles but they are more suitable for long distances with additional accessories often built in such as luggage racks, panniers and mud guards for wet weather. Tourers are generally designed for comfort.

BMX bikes are often used as stunt bikes and a whole generation grew up on the concept of the BMX in the 1980s. Many towns and cities throughout the world have BMX tracks and half pipes for stunts and competitions. The BMX trade is supported with magazines, competitions and media coverage.

Finally, the folding bicycle is an ideal piece of kit for commuting, or cycling to the train station or even for holidays as the design is intended to be lightweight and to be enable the rider to simply fold it up and carry the cycle when not in use. Fold up bikes are more for town use or on a caravan park or to cycle short distances as they have small wheels and are not ideal for long distance cycling.

Cycle Routes

Britain is covered in a vast network of cycle routesboth on-road and off-road. The main obstacle with cycling around Britain is the danger of motorists. Bicycle sales remain

Tarka Trail Devon

constant which indicates that the pastime of cycling is ever popular, unfortunately, the death rate on Britain’s roads also remains prevalent. Navigating your route on safe quiet roads is worth the research if you’re looking for a good cycle route. Cycling on motorways is forbidden and cycling on dual carriageways is legal but can be highly dangerous as they share the same speed limits as the motorways.

There are dozens of mountain bike trails from the Brecon Beacons to the Yorkshire Dales and beyond.  Routes will vary in difficulty and cycle safety is paramount, a good bicycle helmet is essential for downhill and rocky terrain. Man made mountain bike trails are made up of woodland routes, rocky tracks and generally rough terrain.

Camel Trail Tea Gardens

Mountain bike trails can be researched online or by spending a few pounds on a mountain bike magazine. The same may be said for BMX tracks, a good sports blog will help identify some mountain bike or BMX tracks in your local area.

For longer distance cycle routes ‘Sustrans’ cycle charity is a really useful organisation to join. Sustrans can offer safety advice, best road routes, cycle maps and cycle trails such as the Tarka Trail and Devon Coast to Coast. You’ll also get a newsletter with Sustrans highlighting new routes and cycle events such as Sky Ride which takes place annually.

For those wishing to join a cycling club, there are plenty around the UK and for those wishing to explore the idea of a cycling holiday, a good holiday camp or camp site which is near to some stunning scenery and safe cycle will offer all the facilities needed for a great stay adventure. For the really dedicated cyclist, the Lands End to John o’ Groats route is testing but a great chance to raise money for charity and see some beautiful parts of back-road Britain.

Cycle Shops & Brands

There are plenty of cycle stores both online shops and high street stores where you can browse and choose a great bike.

Popular UK brands are Dawes, Pashley, Raleigh, Orange and Brompton with Reynolds tubing making lightweight racing frames. Popular overseas brands include the likes of Marin, Kona, Trek, Spcialized and Cannondale.

Well known stores include Halfords, Evans Cycles,  Cycles UK, Chain Reaction, Cycle Surgery as well as many internet based stores, high street cycle shops and bike superstores.

Most smaller high street stores such as Evans will offer free advice on bicycle maintenance, road safety, frame sizing and accessories such as lights, bicycle helmets, bicycle pumps. Backpacks, cycle kits and much more.

Cycling is a great sport and hobby, and if you respect the road, cycling can be enjoyed by all ages.
