Lulworth castle, built in the early 17th Century as a hunting lodge, became a country house at the heart of a large estate. Thomas Howard, 3rd Lord Bindon, built the Castle in order to entertain hunting parties for the King and Court. The Howards owned it until 1641 when it was purchased by Humphrey Weld, the direct ancestor of the present owners.

Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour will be the venue for the Olympic and Paralympic Sailing competitions and is the first London 2012 Games venue to be finished. So if you are planning to visit these events and you need to find a campsite or holiday park close by, search now before the rush starts and book early to secure your pitch, before the 2012 Olympic Games commence.
Dorset is frequently described as 'The Best of Both Worlds', for behind the varied coastline lies a county rich in archaeology, unspoilt rural villages and countryside, and a history to be proud of.
In the east, most land is low lying, with extensive heathlands. The centre is chalk downland, with extensive rivers and streams, leading to the west, which is more hilly, with a rich landscape of woodland and small fields.
Dorset is famous for the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site , which begins in Poole Harbour, and includes the Purbeck coastline which is the site of special nature reserves and countryside/marine parks.
Why not have a beach holiday at one of the many seaside resorts, such as Bournemouth, Poole, Weymouth, Swanage, and Lyme Regis and if you get tired of doing nothing on the beach, why not visit, the hill forts of Maiden Castle and Hod Hill. Or visit Corfe Castle , or take the children to the Sea Life Centre at Weymouth.
